- The work on the holistic architecture of smart grids has its roots in the research project FENIX.1 Its goal was to control the reactive power exchange between the transmis-sion and distribution grid using distributed generators’ capabilities connected in a medium-voltage grid. The Volt/Var control in the medium-voltage grid was realised in an open loop. ZUQDE2 project was crucial for the emergence of the holistic tech-nical model of smart grids. The Volt/Var control was implemented in a closed loop, indicating that the secondary control, based on state estimator results, is technically feasible in a medium-voltage grid from an industrial point of view. At that time, I was with Siemens AG, Austria. I had the opportunity to thoroughly understand the different applications of energy and distribution management systems and participate in their design and implementation.

The subject of control engineering is interdisciplinary in nature. If we are interested to regulate the DC output voltage of a rectifier to be used for a computer system, then the entire control system consists purely of electrical and electronics components. There will be no moving parts and consequently the
response of such systems to any deviations from the set value will be very fast compared to the response of an electromechanical system like a motor. There are situations where we have to control the position of mechanical load that demands a very fast response, as in the case of aircraft control system. - One impediment to getting computers to solve problems without being explicitly programmed is that existing methods of machine learning, artificial intelligence, self-improving systems, self-organizing systems, neural networks, and induction do not seek solutions in the form of computer programs. Instead, existing paradigms involve specialized structures which are nothing like computer programs (e.g., weight vectors for neural networks, decision trees, formal grammars, frames, conceptual clusters, coefficients for polynomials, production rules, chromosome strings in the conventional genetic algorithm, and concept sets). Each of these specialized structures can facilitate the solution of certain problems, and many of them facilitate mathematical analysis that might not otherwise be possible. However, these specialized structures are an unnatural and constraining way of getting computers to solve problems without being explicitly programmed. Human programmers do not regard these specialized structures as having the flexibility necessary for programming computers, as evidenced by the fact that computers are not commonly programmed in the language of weight vectors, decision trees, formal grammars, frames, schemata, conceptual clusters, polynomial coefficients, production rules, chromosome strings, or concept sets.

- The ability of a human being to find solutions for particular problematic situations is called human intelligence. It is founded on the ability of symbolic (exact and abstract) expression of thoughts and interpretation of sensory stimuli in the form of movement, speech, writing, or pictures. We know from our experience that humans have the ability to simultaneously process a large amount of information and make effective decisions, although neither input information nor consequent actions are precisely (firmly) defined. Our experience tells us that the level of knowledge and gained experience has a large impact on the actual success of human actions. Human thinking and decision making mechanisms represent a perfect model, which scientists and engineers attempt to imitate and transform into practical solutions of diverse technical and nontechnical problems. The results of striving for such development are numerous procedures called artificial intelligence methods. For example, artificial sight and hearing are based on the use and processing of information from cameras and microphones — that is, from technical devices whose functionality matches the human sensory organs — that is, eyes and ears. We can also include algorithms, which contain elements of the human way of thinking and problem solving, such as artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic algorithms, evolutionary or genetic algorithms, and expert systems, into the basic forms of artificial intelligence.

Fourier methods are commonly used for signal analysis and system design in modern telecommunications, radar, and image processing systems. Classical Fourier methods such as the Fourier series and the Fourier integral are used for continuous time (CT) signals and systems, i.e., systems in which a characteristic signal, s(t), is defined at all values of t on the continuum −∞ <t< ∞ . A more recently developed set of Fourier methods, including the discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT) and the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), are extensions of basic Fourier concepts that apply to discrete time (DT) signals. A characteristic DT signal, s[n], is defined only for values of n where n is an integer in the range −∞ <n< ∞. The following discussion presets basic concepts and outlines important properties for both the CT and DT classes of Fourier methods, with a particular emphasis on the relationships between these two classes. The class of DT Fourier methods is particularly useful as a basis for digital signal processing (DSP) because it extends the theory of classical Fourier analysis to DT signals and leads to many effective algorithms that can be directly implemented on general

- Digital signal processing (DSP) refers to anything that can be done to a signal using code on a computer or DSP chip. To reduce certain sinusoidal frequency components in a signal in amplitude, digital iltering is done. One may want to obtain the integral of a signal. If the signal comes from a tachometer, the integral gives the position. If the signal is noisy, then filtering the signal to reduce the amplitudes of the noise frequencies improves signal quality. For example, noise may occur from wind or rain at an outdoor music presentation. Filtering out sinusoidal components of the signal that occur at frequencies that cannot be produced by the music itself results in recording the music with little wind and rain noise. Sometimes the signal is corrupted not by noise, but by other signal frequencies that are of no present interest. If the signal is an electronic measurement of a brain wave obtained by using probes applied externally to the head, other electronic signals are picked up by the probes, but the physician may be interested only in signals occurring at a particular frequency. By using digital filtering, the signals of interest only can be presented to the physician.

- The power transmission network is considered the backbone of the power grid, which carries the energy from a generation station to load centres or transmits energy from one region to another. Transmission networks make power grids more economical by sharing power between regions. In the early stage of power grid evolution, in the late 1800s, the direct current (DC) was used to interconnect isolated, small-scale grids (e.g., in 1882 Germany, 2.4 kV DC). However, the DC transmission soon became uneconomical due to high power losses when two regions are connected over a long-distance transmission line, as the DC voltage levels were considerably low (e.g., 1400 V) during the early stage of the power grid evolution.

Due to the fast progress of Microgrid (MG) systems and the development of advanced computing technologies and communication networks—all of which enhance the efficiency and reliability of power networks—MGs are at the risk of various cyber-attacks which can eventually lead to different glitches in the power
distribution networks. There are many different kinds of cyber-attacks, some of which are the False Data Injection Attack, Denial of Service, Stealth Attack, and Covert Attack. The common goals of these attacks are to cause power outage, economic loss, and even system instability. Cyber-attacks could infiltrate MGs through the communication links, local controllers, or master control channels. In this chapter, a thorough review of the types of cyber-attacks and the problems caused by them in MGs has been presented, and some methods of cyber-attack detection, resilient control system
design, and countermeasures against such attacks have been discussed. Numerous research works have already investigated the subject of cyber-attacks on both the Direct-Current (DC) and Alternating-Current (AC) MG systems. These studies can be divided into two main categories: (a) detection and mitigation approaches, and (b) resilient control system designs. Several subclasses of each of these categories, along with their advantages and disadvantages has been thoroughly investigated in this chapter. In the first category, after detecting a compromised agent, an active or passive mitigation mechanism is activated to prevent the spread of the agent’s destructive effects to the whole system. This may impose some strict limitations on the MGs. In the second category, by developing the distributed attack-resilient control protocols, the resilience of a MG system against potential attacks/faults/noises is enhanced to the point where no detection and mitigation action will be required. - Creator

- The use of voltage source converter-based high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) systems is considered to be a major step in facilitating long-distance power transfer and integrating remotely located renewable energy sources to major consumption centers. First introduced in 1997, with the commissioning of a 3 MW technology demonstrator in Sweden [1], VSC technology has improved drastically over the years in terms of power and voltage rating, harmonic performance, and losses [2, 3].
